Conviction of Sin

“The more one observes the condition of the Church, the more one feels obliged to confess that the conviction of sin is a great mystery’ which can be produced only by the Spirit of God. Proclamation of the law, in word and in deed, can prepare for the experience, but the experience itself comes from God. When a man has that experience, when a man comes under the conviction of sin, his whole attitude toward life is transformed; he wonders at his former blindness, and the message of the gospel, which formerly seemed to be an idle tale, becomes now instinct with light. But it is God alone who can produce the change.

Only, let us not try to do without the Spirit of God.

The fundamental fault of the modern Church is that she is busily engaged in an absolutely impossible task–she is busily engaged in calling the righteous to repentance. Modern preachers are trying to bring men into the Church without requiring them to relinquish their pride; they are trying to help men avoid the conviction of sin. The preacher gets up into the pulpit, opens the Bible, and addresses the congregation somewhat as follows: “You people are very good,” he says; “you respond to every appeal that looks toward the welfare of the community. Now we have in the Bible–especially in the life of Jesus–something so good that we believe it is good enough even for you good people.” Such is modern preaching. It is heard every Sunday in thousands of pulpits. But it is entirely futile.

Even our Lord did not call the righteous to repentance, and probably we shall be no more successful than He.” ~ J. Gresham Mechen

Two Religions

The Mystery of Babylon by Don Fortner.

Two Religions

There are only two religions in this world. All religions, when reduced to their essential elements, must be categorized under one of these two: Free-grace or free-will, the religion of God or the religion of man, the church of God or the synagogue of Satan.

These two religions are represented to us in the book of Revelation by two women. In chapter 12 we see the Church of God, the religion of free-grace, which proclaims salvation by the blood and righteousness of Christ alone, who is the Man Child, represented by “a woman clothed with the sun.” Here, in Revelation 17, we see the religion of Satan, free-willism, man centered, works religion, represented by “The Great Whore…Babylon.”

The character of all false religion is described in John’s vision of the great harlot.Remember, the picture is a symbol of false religion. Do not try to get a literal picture in your mind. Try to grasp the spiritual meaning of the whole picture.Notice the features of this woman, by which we are instructed and warned, lest we be deceived by the great harlot, who “with her much fair speech” and “the flattering of her lips” has caused so many to follow her “as an ox goeth to the slaughter” (Proverbs 7:21-22).

The angel calls her “the great whore.”Not only is she a harlot, she is the mother of all spiritual harlots and abominations in the world. This is the standing symbol in the Word of God for false religion (Jeremiah 3:6-9; Ezekiel 16:28-37; Hosea 1-2; Revelation 2:22). This woman is called the great whore and the mother of harlots, because she is the embodiment and representative of all idolatry, false worship and false doctrine in the world.

To give an indication of her age and her vileness, she is given the name, Babylon the Great(v. 5). This is not a prophecy that the ancient city of Babylon will be resurrected and rebuilt. God destroyed that ancient city in His wrath; and He will destroy mystical Babylon in His fury (Isaiah 13:19-20).

(Isaiah 13:19-20) “And Babylon, the glory of kingdoms, the beauty of the Chaldees’ excellency, shall be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah. 20 It shall never be inhabited, neither shall it be dwelt in from generation to generation: neither shall the Arabian pitch tent there; neither shall the shepherds make their fold there.”

This Babylon is any and all religious systems that are opposed to God. Babylon is the religion of man. It is that religion which teaches salvation by the works of man’s hands and the power of man’s will. Though it is seen in the sacrifice of Cain, it began as an organized religion, an organized system of worship in opposition to God, in the fourth generation after Noah, with Nimrod, the cursed son of Noah’s cursed son, Ham (Genesis 10:8-11). The Bible tells us that Nimrod was “a mighty hunter before the Lord.” But our translation is a very poor translation of the text. Literally, it means, “Nimrod was a mighty rebel before the Lord, the mightiest rebel before the Lord in the earth.” His name, Nimrod, means “a rebellious panther.” It was this “rebellious panther,” Nimrod, who built the city of Babel, or Babylon, and began the religion of confusion (Genesis 11:1-9).

Idolatry is not a gradual decline from truth by well-meaning, but unenlightened men. Idolatry began at Babel in intentional rebellion.

  • It was the invention of a proud race who refused to come to God by faith in a Substitute and refused to trust God’s grace alone.
  • Babylon was born in defiance of God and His Word.
  • The men of Babel despised God’s sovereignty, blood atonement, and salvation by grace.
  • They attempted to build a tower to heaven by the works of their hands, with no regard for the glory of God.

God scattered those men and brought their religion to confusion.

Yet, wherever these idolaters spread through the earth, their religion is essentially the same. All the pagan mythologies, idolatrous images, and religious rituals of the world, no matter how much they differ, have an underlying sameness, which proves that they are all from one original source. That source is Babel, or Babylon, Nimrod’s plan to defeat the purposes of the God of Noah. The one foundational tenet that is always the same in the worldwide religions of Babylon is this: Man’s salvation ultimately depends upon and is determined by man himself!

This woman has made the inhabitants of the earth drunk with the wine of her fornication(Habakkuk 2:15; Revelation 17: 2). The religion of old Babylon is not limited to one race, one time, one place, or even one religious order. It encompasses all. All the kings, and merchants, and inhabitants of the earth, from one generation to another, commit fornication with her and drink from her cup until they are thoroughly drunk, beyond the reach of reason.

The cup which she holds out is a golden cup (v. 4). To the carnal, sensual heart, the world’s religion is very appealing. It is bright, glittering, and full of blessings, promising happiness, health, peace, and prosperity to all who drink from its cup.

But the cup is full of abominations, filthiness and fornication. This is a fact that cannot be disputed. — Wherever false religion gains popularity, wherever free will/works religion is embraced, wherever men are deluded into thinking that righteousness is to be obtained by their good works, moral corruption and decadence always follow. Idolatry produces baseness. Will-worship produces perversity of the most hideous description (Romans 1:18-32). The doctrines of self-righteousness, free-willism, and works salvation always produce moral degradation. The cup is always the same. The old harlot has only one cup. It is always filled with the same, head-spinning wine of free-will, self-righteousness, and good works. Babylon’s wine always produces a drunkenness that causes men and women to

  • glory in their shame,
  • expose their nakedness,
  • and uncover their foreskins,
  • showing themselves to be reprobate (Philippians 3:3).

Notice this too: — The woman is also drunk (v. 6). She is drunk “with the blood of the saints and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus.” “In her was found the blood of prophets, and of saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth” (18:24). — Throughout history, persecution and the murder of God’s saints and prophets have been the work of this great harlot. It is old Nimrod trying still to destroy the kingdom of God. Persecution is not the work of God’s church. It is the work of Babylon.

This woman sits upon many waters(v. 1). The angel tells us plainly that these waters are not literal bodies of water. They are “peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues”(v. 15). That is to say, “The false religion signified by this great harlot is universal in its acceptance.” The prostitution of Divine Truth is supported and accepted by the fallen sons of Adam wherever they are found upon the earth. While the false religions of the world may fight among themselves, at times, they will always be found united in their opposition to the Lord Jesus Christ and the Gospel of the grace of God revealed in him. In this they all “have one mind” (Revelation 17:13).

…two faiths and two repentances…

J.J. West;

There are also two faiths and two repentances recorded in the Bible one true! One false!

Did not Iscariot repent?

Listen to Scripture, “when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself;” and what was the end of that repentance? “he went and hanged himself.” Now “ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.” But Peter repented! Did he go and hang himself? O! No; his was a “godly sorrow” “he went out and wept bitterly.” Now, my hearers, as a sifter in this pulpit, I hope I have drawn the line of demarcation, so that you may in your consciences distinguish between truth and error!

If there be one here who would make me an offender for a word, if there be one who has come to spy out the nakedness of the land do not misunderstand me do not misrepresent what I say I tell you distinctly, and may it be blessed to your soul that eternal life is the gift of God that it is in and through Jesus Christ alone you may hate me now for what I am preaching, but O! If it be blessed, blessed to you, how precious will the truth become. O! The mercy of having been raised to a hope in the soul, and to hope only in and on Jesus! We knew nothing of this when in “our blood” in nature’s darkness.

But what a sweet test it is to have a hope within us that we “are now made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.” To be exercised about our state is an evidence. To understand the meaning of “work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of His good pleasure” (Phil. 2:12,13) is a token, a sure one that we have had the work begun in us. What are we to understand by the word’s “work out your own salvation?” Have we anything to do with it? It is in fact, get at your evidences!

See whether God has redeemed you? Plucked you as a brand from the fire! And this you can only ascertain by the Spirit’s work within “The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: and if children then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with Him, that we may be also glorified together.” (Rom. 8:16,17) [source]

The quagmire of Arminianism

From Job Hupton;

…when men who are distinguished by the Calvinistic character ascend the pulpit, and assert that God in the riches of his unbounded grace, freely and immutably chose a people for himself in eternity, and appointed them to a certain salvation by Jesus Christ; that he absolutely determined the number of his chosen, and specified the persons who compose that number, so that neither addition nor diminution, nor a change of persons can by any means take place; that all the immense treasures of his transcendent love, grace, and mercy, together with all spiritual blessings and privileges, were entailed upon them, exclusively, in Christ, by a sovereign act of his will; that he passed by the rest in righteous sovereignty, and never designed any spiritual favour for them, but left them to perish in their sins ; and that in consequence of the fall, every man’s will is entirely depraved, enslaved by Satan, and averse to all that is good ; and then in a moment drop from this eminence into the quagmire of Arminianism, and begin to advance their offers and overtures; who can help exclaiming with amaze, “how is the fine gold become dim, and the wine turned into water!”

How is the melodious note of the mounting lark, changed for the doleful din of the bird of night ! These men are not only beside the scriptures, but also beside themselves, and hostile to their own characters as Calvinists.

Street Preaching, Catholics, Arminians, False Gospel, etc.

A video worth watching by Michael Bunker, agrarian, Christian, philosopher, etc. His points are valid and his beard is cool. The people I know who claim to “street preach” have little understanding of the Gospel. By posting this video I am in no way endorsing all of Bunker’s work, I’ve watched only three videos so far and will continue to watch his channel. He has a podcast as well.

Woe to them that are at ease in Zion… Amos 6:1

written by Brother Ron Wood

Woe to them that are at ease in Zion…Amos 6:1

There is nothing better in this world than ease and rest.  Our lives are filled with turmoil and trouble, heartache and care so that rest and ease are hard to find and fleeting when we do find it. But what an unspeakable blessing it is when we find true rest and peace in Christ alone. The rest and peace found in Him cannot be disturbed and is beyond any words that man can use to describe it. What a blessed rest it is to see in Christ Jesus the Lord the very wrath of God removed forever, sin put away and warfare ended.  Isa. 40:2  Peace with God is the promise of the Gospel. But our adversary the Devil is a crafty and malicious fiend who will use every deceit to trap and blind.  His favorite tactic is religion.  He has no greater triumph than to take a sinner and clean him up by religion and then give him a false sense of peace when there is no peace. He delights for you to be zealous of religious duty, and loves for you to wonder if this thing or that thing is sin.  He is pleased when you examine yourself to see if you are sinning so you can turn from it. His deception is to cause you to look to yourself, what you do, feel, experience and believe instead of to Christ. That is why God gives us warning in Amos 6:1

A warning to those who are at ease because they are part of the visible Church.

Church membership is not salvation. Though we may belong to the right denomination, have the right doctrine and are among the true people of God it will not save us. Our hope isn’t in the Church but in Christ alone.  All true believers desire to be with and among the people of God in order to worship Him. But don’t rest in your church membership. Rest in Christ.

A warning to those who are looking to something in the past.

False religion will keep you looking back to an experience or a decision or some other thing that happened yesterday or years ago. Folks love to give their testimony of when God saved them because they are looking back to it as their hope.” I remember when” is a constant theme. I remember when a soul winner had me recite a prayer and told me I was saved. I remember when I was in danger and I promised the Lord that I would live for Him if He would get me out of it. I remember when I was moved by the Spirit to go forward and confess my sin and accept Jesus into my heart. If you have to remember when you aren’t trusting Christ.  Today is the day of salvation not yesterday. I must trust Him today forgetting those things which are behind. I need mercy today.  Don’t look back to what you did or experienced  but today if you will hear His voice harden not your hearts.

A warning to those who are trusting something that they are doing.

A reformed life is not salvation, Christ is.

A dedicated life is not salvation, Christ is.

A sanctified life is not salvation, Christ is.

A moral religious life is not salvation, Christ is.

A warning to those who hold to cheap grace rather then free grace.

Cheap grace is that grace that costs you nothing and is worth every penny you paid for it.  It costs nothing and is worth nothing to you.  Those who love cheap grace take the worship of God lightly.  If they have something better to do they do it. Cheap grace means that Christ is something to you but not everything to you.

Woe to them that are at ease in Zion…  Find your rest and peace in Christ alone.

THE BRAMBLE BUSH

THE BRAMBLE BUSH

John Kay

On standing on any high hill in this world, where a view is commanded over the adjacent country to any great existent, to a contemplative mind, under God’s grace alone, there are many diversified feelings to rush, and ebb, and flow to and fro, at times, which appear to be profitable. “The scene that here lies stretched before me”, says the spiritual beholder of such a prospect, “is a fit emblem of myself and of every one else. The various towers of the “churches”, the distant towns, the parcelling out of the green earth with its sharp and prickly hedges, and the vast works of man here piled up and manifested at a glance to me from hence, “all things are full of labour; man cannot utter it; this sore travail hath God given to the sons of men to be exercised therewith.” And a sore travail, sure enough, it is for any one to whom the most high God hath given such an occupation, spiritually, to have “a heart given to seek and search out, by wisdom, concerning all things that are done under heaven;” to be marked, see, and learn the difference as to what the work of the ever-blessed God is. (Eccl. 1:8, 13) For it is certain that, though we have none of the former in this country, except in shows; yet, God has created wolves and bears, as well as clean kinds of animals. (Ezek.44:23) And though, in the prospect, bears and wolves do not run wild before me, yet, I only have to pass my eye about for a little time before, and in the thorn hedge of this world I can find a pretty good stock any day, of bastard Calvinists – those briers with which we are told by the prophet as above, the whole land shall become infested. For it is certain God had made every thing beautiful to typify man, the chief of the works of God. (Eccl. 3:11) Thus, our blessed Saviour expressly calls the non-elect goats and tares. And both Isaiah and Paul divide God’s rejected enemies into thorns and briers. As I have already, I trust, been enabled a little to fence my hands with iron, to thrust away those sons of Belial, the thorns that so beautifully emblify the Arminians, that must not be touched by any good man, except with the staff of a spear, I wish I could be enabled as easily to cause bastard Calvinism, like a vast bramble bush, “to be utterly burned with the fire in the same place.” (II Sam. 23:6,7) Thus, again our most blessed Saviour calls those meek and pious hypocrites, those docile ministers of the letter, whose pictures face us in the magazines and picture shops, and who “creep into houses, leading silly women captive”; those meek bastard Calvinist preachers whom I have seen and known, to my sorrow, and whose skin-deep religion adorns all our religious tea-parties, where downright Arminianism, as rank weeds, does not grow; I say, all our mealy-mouthed bastard Calvinist preachers, those poor chaffy oracles, as wise in self-conceited religion, as seven men that can give a true reason; (Prov. 26:16) those poor sons of grimace who have a mask and false show of pulpit talents in public, and a mild, and pleasing, and catching show of sanctimonious talk and glum looks in private, concerning religion; I say, our Saviour ships off, as it were at one stroke, to Botany Bay, those polite hypocrites and accomplished deceivers, by calling them “ravening wolves.” (Matt. 7:15) And so they are. The apostle calls them dogs. (Phil. 3:2) The apostle Peter, that heavenly-minded apostle, calls them every name that is spiritually bad. (See his 2nd Epistle, 2nd Chapter)

But I must touch the root of the bramble bush, for I cannot pretend to go over, within the limits of this paper, the multiplied branches of this tree which the Lord hath cursed. (Heb. 6:8) I say then, once for all, that the root of brambly bastard Calvinism is letter-knowledge.

“But”, say some, “faith in Christ is taking God at His word, as revealed in holy Scripture.” That I call letter-faith; it is man’s taking, namely, taking God at His word. O, awful! I believe all these takers! will be in hell, if they die as they are, as surely as each of them has a head on his shoulders. Thus, what these takers get to build their brambly bastard Calvinism with. I believe they will be executed for, with all the rest of the non-elect, under the universal statute of heaven: namely, that “the wages of sin is death.” For, if invading the prerogative of the Holy Ghost is not death, I know not what is. Thus, bastard Calvinism, for every one of its opinions, will be executed or theft in taking them out of the letter of holy Scriptures without the seal of the Holy Spirit in the work of experience in the soul, which is the only royal way pursued by the court of heaven towards its favourites, the elect. Thus the capital charge on which bastard Calivinists will be executed in their conscience, under the wrath of God, will be for taking their religion out of the letter of the holy Scripture in the face of the warnings to the contrary therein contained, namely, that “he is not a Jew who is one outwardly,” in the letter, and that he alone is a manifested elect soul, who is “builded for an habitation of God, through the Spirit,” in experience alone: for the experimental knowledge of God and Christ in the heart is through God the Holy Ghost alone. Therefore. I say, bastard Calvinists will all be executed for high treason against God the Holy Spirit, which is the unpardonable sin (sic). One might, indeed, have thought that the poor wretches might have been staggered out of letter-Calvinism by reading, in the letter, that a true saint in God’s account is one who is “Gods husbandry building, and habitation;” and for whom Paul accordingly prays. “that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him; the eves of your understanding being enlightened, that ye may know what is the hope of His calling, and what is the exceeding greatness of His power to usward who believe, according to the working of His mighty power!” (Eph. 1:16,etc.) O, no; bastard Calvinists live in a different day to what the apostle Paul did! God had to teach the apostle Paul, but “the Scriptures can teach me,” says the bastard Calvinist. Thus, in London, and in various of the counties in England, these bastard Calvinist preachers and churches are getting more common every day.

Thus (reverting again to the hill I might suppose myself standing on in the natural world) all these works of man which I can see, will be burnt up to utter desolation. “The things that are seen are temporal;” all mere letter-knowledge of Scripture, all mere letter-knowledge of God, all mere letter-knowledge of the Old and New Testaments, “for he is not a Jew who is one outwardly;” all mere bastard Calvinism which stands in the cold letter, and not in the Spirit’s work internally; in the glorious experimental kingdom of God, in the soul experience; I say, under the mighty teachings of God alone, and not taken by mere reading; all bastard Calvinism, I say, will go off at the last day like a crack of thunder in a thunder storm; a sound, and nothing else. Thus, all things which I see from hence, trees, woods, hedges, towns, villages, grand mansion houses; the humble cottage of the peasant, and the swelling castle of the lord; the park of the square, the blazing grandeur of the duke’s high revelling hall, and the poor poverty-pinched cot of the day labourer; all these, the whole visible creation, every thing I see, must come down! “Yet once more I shake not the earth only, but also the heaven.” (Heb. 12:26) “The heavens shall pass away also with a great noise.” Then, where will bastard Calvinism be? Far be it from me to say one word against the letter of holy Scripture. I know it to be true, but I equally know that it cannot save any one. Salvation stands in power, and in power only. Accordingly. Paul says of the Corinthians, “I will not know your speech, but your power; for knowledge puffeth up; but the demonstration of the Spirit and of power in the conscience and soul, is alone salvation.” (See I Cor. 1-5) For “the kingdom of God,” in the souls of the really elect, “is not in word, but in power.” Now, the Psalmist says. “God hath spoken once; twice have I heard this; that power belongeth unto God.” (Psa. 62:11) Now, what becomes of bastard Calvinism? Now, what becomes of “you ought” and “you ought not”? Now, what becomes of free will masked under good John Calvin? Now, what becomes of those taking truth out of the letter, and who are never compelled to wait only upon God? “My soul, wait thou only upon God.” (Psa. 62:5) for the letter of holy Scripture is only the echo. “The voice of the Lord Himself, powerful and full of majesty,” experienced in the soul, in the all and in all to the elect. (Psa 29:4; II Cor. 2:4, 3) And the inward teachings of God in the elect soul exactly agree with holy Scripture. The incarnate, inward, and written word agree. (Rev. 19:13)

Thus, the apostle cuts all bastard Calvinists off at a stroke; “As many as have not the Spirit of Christ are none of His.” By this stroke He cuts off the whole family of bastard Calvinists, who shall find, at the last day, to their carnal and everlasting confusion, that crowds in hell, as well as they, have had the letter of holy Scripture, and have been as wise, more or less, as Ahithophel, too, in it; and have been damned, all one for that. (Matt. 6:22) Bastard Calvinists shall then suck the poison of asps; they shall gnaw their tongues; they shall see the folly of having made game of experience, and of having made light of experimental Christians, who are alone the Children of God, to the shutting out of all others else, whoever they may be. “For he is a Jew” only, like Christ, “who is so inwardly in the Spirit and not in the letter. Nay, our great bastard Calvinist preachers in London appear to me only to be grimalkins, buzzards, and apes; for, what think you, to my own knowledge, did I hear one of the Particular Baptist very popular bastard Calvinist preachers there saying? He, Philistine-like, called the experimental people “frogs, croaking in a stagnant pool about their sins. Did ever any one hear such glaring blasphemy? Again: I have heard of the great independent bastard Calvinist preachers there, just in the same way. Iron-hearted blasphemy they rave about, and preach up “the equitable right of claim(!)” of the elect for salvation from the ever adorable God; thus destroying at one blow, godly filial fear, which is one bright jewel in the crown of a hell. deserving sinner saved by grace; a jewel, so far like Christ, who “was heard in that He feared.” (Heb. 5:7) I need not say that the iron-hearted Independent, like the Particular Baptist bastard Calvinist preachers, cry down experience because they have none. For, if the poor wretches knew one mite of experimental, deep, and saving teachings under the Holy Spirit alone, it would poison all their letter self-conceit, yea, and devil-conceit at one blow! Poor wretched “bastard Jews, Bar-jesuses” that they are. (Acts 13:6)

And it is my deliberate opinion that bastard Calvinism will flood the land. There shall, in the last days, be perilous times, in which there shall be a form of godliness, which form is bastard (fatherless) Calvinism, not built up in the soul by the living hand of experience alone, which is the work of God the Holy Spirit. The work of the Holy Ghost alone is the divine cement which holds together the spiritual house of a true elect man’s knowledge of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. This is what teaches him also what man is, and what self is. Every thing short of this is a brier, even as an Arminian is a thorn in God’s sight. And, as sure as God is living, they shall, dying so, be cast into hell together. So be it; “the whole land shall become briers and thorns.”
